Ways to Give

Non-Cash Gifts

Non-Cash Gifts

The UNMF Foundation gladly accepts gifts in the form of securities, bonds, mutual funds, and personal property. These gifts allow you to make an immediate impact upon the lives of students, faculty and academic programs and are a tax-wise way to support UNM.

With a charitable gift of appreciated property held for at least a year, the donation you make and the deduction you get are greater than if you were to sell the property and donate the cash proceeds instead.

If you were to sell an appreciated asset, you’ll likely pay capital gains tax on the increase in current fair market. By gifting, rather than selling the property, you’ll avoid paying capital gains tax. You will receive a charitable income tax deduction for the current fair market value on the date of the gift.

Personal Property

The UNM Foundation gladly accepts gifts of personal property that the University would otherwise need to purchase, or that further the endeavors of our educational and research mission. Sometimes these contributions directly relate to UNM’s mission, while other gifts are sold and converted to cash to further our work. The UNM Foundation accepts real property, rare books and manuscripts, artwork, scientific instruments, computer software, patents, copyrights and other intellectual property, oil and gas interests, and royalty interests.

We would be happy to discuss how a gift of appreciated property might fit into your own personal, financial, and charitable planning. For more information, please contact Suzanne Awen at 505-313-7668.
