Coach Rusty Mitchell Endowed P.E. Teacher Scholarship

For 34 years (1966-99), Coach Russell “Rusty” Mitchell made Lobo men’s gymnastics one of the most successful athletic programs in UNM history. Many of his former athletes attribute their success in life to Coach Mitchell’s influence. To honor Coach Mitchell, a group of former gymnasts and colleagues is establishing an endowed scholarship for undergraduate students in the Physical Education Teacher Preparation Program. This permanent scholarship will provide meaningful awards to outstanding students each year who plan to work as PE teachers or coaches.
