Dottie Barrett Memorial Scholarship in Music
The Dottie Barrett Memorial Scholarship in Music supports undergraduate or graduate students in good standing, pursuing a degree in the Department of Music. Students studying the cello are preferred.
Dorothy “Dottie” Barrett was principal cellist of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra for fourteen years, from 1972 to 1985, and principal of the precursor to the NMSO (the Albuquerque Symphony Orchestra) from 1966 to 1971. She taught cello privately, and her influence was remarkable, as many of her students attained successful careers as professional musicians. Dottie was also an accomplished weaver, and she and her husband, Dick Barrett, served as co-chairs of of the Friends of Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe, which supported the Santa Fe Fine Arts Museum. Dottie was a remarkable woman whose interests and talents affected the lives of so many: her students, her colleagues, friends and those fortunate enough to know her.
